Lactose prices are on par with SWP the world over
Europe
Prices in some categories exceed food whey powder prices
Lactose prices continue to appreciate with most transaction in the first week of August happening in the EUR 1625-1650 ex works range. Some outliers for specific quality are even happening at levels above EUR 1800. Demand in all customer categories is quite good, which explains the ongoing price appreciation. As usual at these high prices customers sometimes take the risk of waiting too long for prices to come down and now have to chase volumes at very high price levels.
Americas
Prices are on par with SWP
The market remains very tight judging by customers becoming less fastidious about packaging formats and specifications. Prices are in the range of USD 0.75-0.80/lb (1655-1765/t) ex works, which implies that lactose prices are on par with dry whey. Continuous strong export demand in Latin America and Asia in particular remains the key driving force as domestic demand is not extraordinary.
